Winter Weather & School

Cold temperatures and winter conditions are returning to our region. As per Grande Prairie Public School's administrative procedure, schools remain open during regular school hours despite winter weather. School buses will not operate if the City of Grande Prairie temperature at 6:00 a.m. is -40°C or colder (-48°C with wind chill).

Here are some practical tips and guidelines for families as they help their children navigate winter weather while at school:

Walking To School

Many students are walking to and from school. Parents and guardians could check in with their children to ensure they leave home equipped to protect exposed skin from winter weather.

Students may be expected to go outside for outdoor or physical education classes. These classes will continue unless there are extreme weather conditions.

School Buses

If your child is riding the school bus, warm clothing is important to keep them safe during winter weather.

Families can use the FirstView App to track their bus and stay informed about unexpected delays or cancellations. The App is provided by First Student Canada, the contractor operating school buses on behalf of GPPSD. Download the App: https://www.firstviewapp.com

Dressing for Cold Weather

Layering is a great way to keep warm and help protect from wind chill.
